Through all of my food experiences in town one thing remains constant, the exceptional taste and quality of the cakes at Fego. They have in the past, present, and most likely future the best cakes in town. For me an establishment should have good coffee if I’m going to suggest it for a coffee date to a friend, Mum, loved one, or business potential. I also know Mum’s have a tough job often with very little sleep so coffee is important!
However, if there’s a chance of lingering after said date one of two things should exist – great food or even greater cake.
Whilst Fego Cafe does have a lovely savoury food menu, we’re focusing on their cakes today. They truly deserve an entire post dedicated to them.
They have a selection to cater for everyone’s taste buds: Nutella cheesecake, snickers cheesecake, lemon meringue cheesecake (yes, I love cheesecake, yes, I’ve tried them all, yes each more than once). Let’s continue, carrot cake, caramel cake, chocolate cake, chocolate mud cake, red velvet cake. And if none of these appeal to you then nothing will.
Let’s go into detail with some of these shall we?
The Cheesecakes – Each of these heavenly gems are baked, which in my opinion is how cheesecake should be made. So many people just set their cheesecake. I’m convinced that they’ve never put their cake into an oven and hence don’t know what they’re missing out on. The Nutella cheesecake (you guessed it) has a Nutella ganache on top of it. The snickers have pieces of snickers candy bars in it. And the lemon meringue has lemon infused into the cheesecake, topped off with an egg white meringue on top.
Caramel Cake – this is a very soft and fluffy vanilla fairy cake. I say fairy because it’s lighter than a sponge with a fresh cream filling and a caramel glaze covering it. This is your private school version of the simple caramel cake from Woolies. It’s not too sweet, not too dense, just right for the Goldilocks out there.
Red Velvet – Honestly, it’s red velvet cake, I shouldn’t need to say anymore to sell this to you. So, I won’t.
Carrot Cake – I’m not a huge fan of carrot cake but the inclusion of carrots pretty much makes this a salad. However I’ll take any day over an actual salad. The main thing that stands out with this confectionary delight is that it has actual cream cheese frosting. Not the fake imitation nonsense.
Chocolate Cake – this might just be the only cake I haven’t ‘tasted’ at Fego. That’s because once I had their chocolate mud cake, I knew that nothing else involving cocoa would come close.
Chocolate Mud Cake – This cake is everything you want in a chocolate cake. It’s rich in its’ chocolatey flavour, it’s moist, it’s dense, it’s decadent. Some say it’s too decadent but I’m not one of those people.
Cake goes well with everything. Tea. Cappuccinos. Chai Lattes. Even water. Side note, Fego also has the best Chai Lattes I’ve ever tasted in Gaborone. It’s also important to mention that their cappuccinos are some of the biggest in town and [coffees are] some of the cheapest.
And even though this post is about cake their Fegoccinos are out of this world amazing. No one else makes anything even remotely similar and you have got to try one if you haven’t yet. I don’t know how you’ve made it this far in life without one. If you’ve had one, I’m right aren’t I?
Other bits of info.
Now cakes can’t be the only thing to take you to a place, well they can, but for arguments sake here are some other informative tid bits. Their waiters are always friendly and helpful, whilst not hovering too much because no one likes that.
They have Wi-Fi, good Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi that lasts as long as you’re there and doesn’t time out after a while. And finally, it’s in a great location. Although being Gabs, everything really is 10 minutes away from everything else.
In today’s hustle and bustle it’s always nice to take a moment for ourselves and to chat with great company over great food. Be it to discuss how brilliantly the kids are doing at school this week, how crazy the in laws made you yesterday, how your hairdresser took more than an inch off (don’t they always?) Whatever the topic why not have it with cake next time?
If you’re feeling fancy there’s also the option to buy a cake from Fego. Maybe for an event you’re having; a birthday party, a family dinner you’re hosting over the holidays, a casual Tuesday night perhaps?
There’s a restaurant, which I will keep unnamed, who has a slogan that reads something like ‘The burgers are better at…’ Well the cakes really are better at Fego!
