The Botswana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) is one of our favourite organizations. It’s a non-profit animal welfare group. A small contingent of dedicated employees run the BSPCA. Volunteers form the Committee.
They help animals in need. They prevent suffering through rescue, rehoming, cruelty investigation and community outreach. It’s these operations that are funded exclusively through donations.
We sat down with Jenny one of the BSCPA’s tireless volunteers to find out more about their fabulous fundraising events.
She says
“Events that bring people to the shelter are important as they raise awareness, are fun and bring community together.”
She told us all about the Great Gaborone Bake off, Halloween and the Christmas Fair.
The Best Gaborone Bake-Off
This is a 3 week long sugary competition held at the BSPCA’s Bark an Bite. It’s where bakers showcase and compete to see who will be crowned 2018’s Best Gaborone Baker. There are also prizes to be won for the top 3 bakers. 1st prize is a dinner at Basilico and 2nd place is a dinner for two at Caravella’s. The 3rd prize is an awesome hamper from Bokomo. Entrance into the competition is P50 and I believe there are a couple of spots left. Please note that every week bakers will bring their delicious baked goods to the Bark and Bite from home.
Week 1- Cupcakes
The first bake off is this coming weekend (6th October). There are 20 competitors. Each competing baker makes 20 cupcakes and brings them to the shelter.
To keep things fair they’re getting external judges in. The first week sees the Headmasters from Thornhill, Northside and MaruAPula tasting and finding the winners. Only 10 will go through to the following week. Bake-Offs are serious and the competition is stiff!
For the first week the BSPCA are having 20 kids from Gamodubu Child Care Trust join them for a party. They need the kids and the general public to help eat all of those cupcakes.
Week 2- All About Chocolate
The second week is all about chocolate. We’ll definitely be at Bark and Bite for this one. As who isn’t a chocoholic? These delicious cakes will be sold to the general public.
There will only be 3 people that go into the final week. It’s a tough judging job for the judges. They are the managers of Woolworths, Pick n Pay, and Spar.
Week 3- A little Extravagance
The final week will be a surprise week. No amount of questions and cajoling would get Jenny to give us more information. We don’t even know who the judges for this finale will be. What we do know is that the baked goods are going to be delectable. We’ll be awaiting the yumminess.
Halloween
Not content with just the Bake Off, the following week the Bark and Bite are having some Halloween Fun. (27th of October). There will be apple bobbing, dress up games, musical bums and many more fun games on offer.
The Christmas Fair
The Bspca have a fantastic Christmas Fair. This year is no exception. However it’s going to be even bigger and better than last years. Not only will there will great stalls selling their wares. There will be toffee apples and candy floss for the kids (and adults). There will also be one very special guest making an appearance. It might also be his first one of the season in Gaborone… Father Christmas will be there!
So as you can see, the BSPCA have some wonderful events coming up. Please do go support them. They’re fun, festive and always involve good food. It is also for a good cause.
Don’t forget when you’re there to go and say hello to the animals. It’s for them that everyone works so hard. You might find you can give a dog or cat its forever home.
