The first Steers restaurant was opened in 1960 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Steers founder, George Halamandress had the vision to create a successful family-run business. The idea for Steers originated while he was on holiday in the United States where he came across innovative food industry concepts and ideas. He decided to bring these new food industry methods to South Africa.
George Halamandress also created the Milky Lane ice cream palours.
In 1983, Steers became a franchise after placing an ad in the newspaper. 15 more Steers restaurants opened up within the next two years after that. Steers has seen massive growth since then. They started expanding beyond South Africa in the late 1990s into countries like Botswana, Swaziland, , Zimbabwe, Kenya, Mauritius, Zambia, Tanzania, and Ivory Coast.
Steers has continued to prosper and currently has over 600 restaurants worldwide.
