In my opinion dad’s also need a break from time to time. To hang out with other dads and complain about work, the kids (the wife at times but you didn’t hear that from me). So for you dads out there I’ve chosen my top two picks for you to enjoy some time off, with a beer obviously, and your buds.

1) Bull and Bush
Now Bull and Bush or Bnb, as the cool kids refer to it, has been around since before my time and thus forever. It’s a Gaborone staple.
Dad’s Night Entertainment
They have Action Cricket.
Pool tables.
They have live entertainment on certain evenings
There is also a monthly Pub Quiz – no comment, my general knowledge is shocking.
They have TVs for the sports watchers. The staff is great in keeping up with whichever popular sporting event is on, needs watching and will change the channel when asked.
What sets Bull and Bush apart is the people. Since it’s been around for so long it’s known as Gaborone’s local watering hole and you’re bound to run into someone you know even if you weren’t expecting to. This has happened to me on many occasions, sober or not.
Food Picks, because let’s face it, this is what we’re here for:
Their pizzas – especially their Mark’s Special which is made up of a pizza base (standard), sauce, chicken, bacon, feta, tomato, green pepper and mushrooms. This pizza breakdown is accurate as I’m sitting at the bar at Bnb with an open menu copying it down.
If you want to get real crazy try to swap out the bacon (your world will not end) and replace it with avocado. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on Auntie’s green sauce don’t forget to drench your pizza in it. But be careful it’s made with love and a chilly or two so it packs a punch.
Their steaks – which are some of the best in town alongside chips, or veggies. And if you don’t know about their veggies they comprise of creamed spinach, mashed butternut and steamed carrots. I don’t think I ever appreciated vegetables before I tried this amazing trio at Bull and Bush.
Upon further study of their menu I see that the steak can alternatively be accompanied by a baked potato, rice or salad as well. Some of you may be new to my style of eating so let me just illustrate the lack of need to order rice or salad with your steak. A baked potato maybe.
Their ribs – there’s a reason why they’re sometimes sold out before 8pm on Mondays.
It’s had a few owners in its’ time, as written in ‘The Tail of the Bull and Bush’ found on the first page of their new menu and is currently run by the trustworthy hands of the Flanagan’s. A family. And Bull and Bush is just that, a family.
2) Culture Art Café
Not as many people know about Culture and that is a shame. It’s in Molapo Crossing overlooking the Stanbic Bank Piazza and is a little gem (notice the wordplay) in Gaborone.
Culture is relatively new, having opened its’ doors almost one year ago. It’s open from 11 – 11 daily, check out their Facebook Page to fact check this claim but nonetheless it is a great space for anyone.
It has recently undergone some renovations adding to their unique décor. Most of you may not care about this, but hey it’s something to tell the wives when you get back home.
Dad’s Night Entertainment –
They have stunning artwork.
Beer.
They have Corona! Yes, this is also a beer but it’s not that easy to come by in Gabs and I’ve noticed quite a lot of people enjoy it.
And wine and wine specials on Wednesdays – I know some of you guys like wine so don’t deny it, this is a safe space.
They have an extensive selection of fancy looking, hard liquors.
Their inside seating area is ideal to sit comfortably and enjoy watching a match be it The FA Cup, Premier League, please insert other regularly viewed sporting events here. And their tables outside are perfect to enjoy the warmer weather and converse. Probably about the regular viewed sporting event you just watched inside.
Food Picks
Their seswaa croquettes, actually their cheese croquettes as well.
Their Culture Art Café Burger, I prefer the beef but the chicken is great as well. They also offer a vegetarian option but let’s face it, meat.
Their Chicken Prego is a new addition to the menu and it’s a great one. It’s presented in an in house freshly made whole-wheat bun, healthy.
Their half chicken marinated in Maungo Craft’s Mara Mara Jam is another must.
If you’re going with a few friends I’d suggest ordering a Culture Platter or two. This comes with mini burgers, wings, chips, seswaa croquettes, cheese croquettes and a side salad.
I’ve eaten there a few times if you couldn’t tell.
If I had the time and the word count I’d go into great depth about their house made relishes and sauces. These are beautifully prepared and executed to deliver you great taste satisfaction. Make sure you demand all of their sauces when you’re there, you’re welcome in advance. Their hand cut, bar snack, chips are another must have. They’re like Lays crisps, but better.
