In this age of social media, cellphones, laptops and all sorts of screens, parents might find it difficult to get their children to enjoy reading. Well, fortunately, to make the journey a lot easier, there are several bookstores in Gaborone where parents can find many exciting, educational and entertaining books for children.
Reading helps children to stimulate their minds, reduce stress, increase their vocabulary, knowledge as well as improve their focus and concentration. And they make wonderful Christmas gifts for children of all ages. So, here are a few stores where one can find amazing books for their children.
1. CNA Bookstores
Located at Airport Junction Mall and Game City, CNA boasts a wide range of books for children of all ages. The great thing about CNA is that, not only do they offer reading books, educational books are also widely available in their stores for parents who may want their children to brush up on certain subjects that they are learning at school.
2. Exclusive Books
Previously located at Riverwalk Mall, Exclusive books has relocated to Airport Junction Mall and the new store stocks the largest selection of children’s books in Botswana. One of the most popular book stores in Gaborone, with forty stores all over the world, Batswana children and parents can visit the store and are able to sit down and read a book of their choice in the children’s book section. Children are always spoilt for choice at Exclusive Books!
3. Botswana Book Center
Located in the heart of the city, Main Mall, this book store boasts a wide range of mostly educational books for children. They also stock a good selection of books in Setswana and gift collections or toy/book activity combinations. The great thing about this book store is that it is the trusted (oldie but goodie) of Gaborone’s book stores because both it, and Main Mall have been in operation for many, many years.
4. REWA Seva Community Library
An absolute haven for children, this community library is moving from Phakalane to Maru-a-Pula, to open at the REWA Education Centre on December 10. Children all the way up until the age of thirteen will not be short of a book or activity to partake in. Not only do they have a fully flourishing library, over the weekend, children are able to do activities such as: reading and art, book club and art or even story basket and art. Parents can both pay an annual or monthly fee for access to the library’s services. If anyone is looking to donate any pre-loved books, REWA Library gladly accepts donations.
5. Sebilo Books
Based in a town just outside of Gaborone called Oodi, this bookstore prides itself in being a mobile and virtual bookstore. Sebilo Books stocks a wide range of children’s books from workbooks to leisurely reading material in the form of picture books for younger kids and early readers. In the pipework, are Saturday morning reading sessions for children. This would be a lovely way for parents who live in Gaborone to take a little drive outside of the city, while also giving their children the gift of exploring their little minds and imaginations.
6. BSPCA Bookstore
The Botswana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals is a non-profit welfare organisation located in Broadhurst next to the Hindu Crematiorium. Not only is it a fun place to take children to either play with or adopt an animal to take home with them, they have a lovely bookstore too filled with a variety of books for children. This is also a bookstore that gladly accepts book donations.
7. The Honeycomb Wood
For those who want to support local, why not buy books written by children for children. Honeycomb Wood runs a course for children in Botswana and South Africa to write, illustrate and publish their own books. At only P80 per book, they’re great value and give the young authors a massive sense of accomplishment. Books are available from The Honeycomb Hub in Phakalane, who also has a small children’s book shop as well as a free book exchange.
8. Edutoys
Edutoys has a small book corner, but don’t be misled by the size of the area. They’ve got fiction and non-fiction for all ages. They specialise in books that encourage kids to enjoy learning, so its no wonder they have a big selection of play guides and workbooks. They also stock plenty of picture books, classics, treasuries and graded book sets. The best selection is at their Commerce Park location.
