Festive seasons are special in many ways; schools are closed, children are on holidays, families come together and the mood is cheerful. It’s also a time that many people celebrate Christmas.
Every family, and community, has over time adopted different traditions when it comes to celebrating Christmas. Shopping malls and some homes are adorned with beautifully lit Christmas trees and nativity plays are a common favourite, remembering the reason for the season.
The most beautiful part of Christmas is the spirit of giving, some people exchange gifts while others find ways of helping the less privileged in their communities.
For families that will be at home and enjoying each other’s company, I have picked three movies that I believe will be enjoyed by everyone in the family, especially if you will be indoors to observe COVID-19 protocols.
Noelle
Noelle is great Christmas movie released in 2019 and runs for 100 minutes.
Raised in a Christmas spirited family, Noelle carries her father’s love for Christmas. Santa passes away and Noelle’s brother has to take over as Santa Clause.
As Christmas approached Noelle wants to do something for Christmas and her brother, training to be Santa Clause, but becomes so overwhelmed and wants to be alone.
Caring for her brother, she advises him to take a break. With no hesitations he leaves, never to return. This builds fear in the North Pole that Christmas will have no Santa Clause.
Noelle calls a rescue mission to find Santa Clause.
Watching this movie will show that Christmas is all about kindness and that there is more to do when the community one lives in is in need. There’s an emphasis on the spirit of giving than receiving as well as the importance of family time.
The Elf-Man
The Elf-Man is a movie released in 2012 and runs for 81 minutes. It’s so hilarious and amazing at the same time. The children will definitely enjoy it.
The story starts on Christmas Eve when a father and his two children, a boy and girl, are busy putting decorations up for Christmas. The father remembers that he has to collect some Christmas supplies.
He then leaves the children with their grandmother who’s visiting to celebrate Christmas with the family.
The father doesn’t come home as promised but is abducted by bad guys.
The children imagine a boring Christmas without their father. Suddenly, the family discovers an Elf-Man in the house, who promises to find their father.
The movie gets to show some witty ends, the spirit of giving and forgiveness. The movie also highlights that dreams do come true when you believe.
Home Alone
Home Alone is a classic Christmas movie from the 90’s that was enjoyed by children and adults around the world, and it’s still so relevant. It was released in 1990 and runs for 103 minutes.
The movie is centred a young boy who loved whining and didn’t want to do somethings for himself. This caused him to be grounded, and accidentally forgotten for a family Christmas holiday in France.
He wakes up to an empty house, and quickly warms up to the idea that he’s now boss of the house.
His house become a target for bandits. He toughens up and stands strong to defend himself from the bandits, so that they don’t kill him and steal from the house.
The tactics he uses are so hilarious and working well in his defence.
This movie is ideal for parents to talk to their children about certain behaviour. How important it is to listen to instructions and how to act when faced with difficult situations when parents are not home.
