The Black Panther premiere was an unforgettable theatrical experience, finally, a superhero who reflected the strength and power of Africa. Celebration and African attire filled cinemas across the world.
The movie was an emotional expression of everything I had felt internally my whole life. The desire to share the beauty of my Africa with the rest of the world. The depth and colour of African prints, the music, the captivating sights and scenery and some of the talents I had grown up watching on tv.
Watching the movie with my family was a moment I’ll always remember. Seeing how pumped my teen brothers were at the end of the movie, imagining how the future of Africa could be. And the legacy of Wakanda.
Chadwick Boseman lived a life of legacy and purpose. A true superhero. Here are some life lessons and values I learned from the character and integrity of the Black Panther and Chadwick Boseman.
The Strength And Beauty Of The Women Of Wakanda
I saw women who were confident in who they were and were strong. I admired the Warrior Women, with their shaved heads and battle-ready armour, ready to protect Wakanda at all cost. Tech-savvy Shuri, who was in every way her brother’s keeper. Princess Nakia who was bold in living out her purpose and fought beside the love of her life. And not forgetting the regal Queen Mother.
Celebrating African Languages
One of Africa’s greatest treasures is the diverse array of languages. Black Panther taught me to be proud of my native dialect and accent.
The Self Sufficient Tiny Town of Wakanda
I saw the excitement in my siblings’ eyes as they watched the movie, imagining Africa as it could be. A continent that offers the best help and solutions to the world, changing lives everywhere. If that isn’t the essence of a true superhero, I don’t know what is.
Help Can Come From Unexpected Places
At the beginning of the movie, M’baku was not one of my favourite characters. This quickly changed when his humour came out and he became an ally. Showing that sometimes, help can come from the people we least expect.
Heroes Also Struggle
Not even superheroes are immune to challenges. Black Panther faced personal struggles. Sudden loss, the disappointment of finding out his uncle was murdered by his father, being betrayed by his best friend, and the feelings of insecurity when it was time to become King.
The scene where he said it wasn’t his time to join the afterlife hits differently now. Knowing that Chadwick was battling cancer while shooting the movie, his words hit harder, “the struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose“. This wasn’t just a speech but the wisdom of a hero who was pressing on with purpose until the very end. This is why Chadwick Boseman will forever be my superhero.

New Capitol Cinema continues to bring back movies safely with this weekend’s lineup in honor of Chadwick Boseman. Find a Black Star at NCC Masa by the escalator where guests are welcome to take pictures.
From Friday 4th to Sunday 6th September and Thursday 10th September, find special screenings of Black Panther, Avengers Infinity war and 21 Bridges movies, across all NCC Sites. At a classic price of P20 per movie.
